Admissions and the entrance exam
Admission to Right Tail Math is decided by a supervised entrance exam, reviewed by our academic team. Here is exactly how it works.
The four steps
Apply
A five minute application about your student’s math so far: current course, contests and goals.
Entrance exam
A 60 minute online exam, supervised on camera with a parent’s consent. It measures reasoning on unfamiliar problems, not speed on drills.
Admission decision
Our academic team reviews every exam. You receive a written decision and, if admitted, a cohort placement.
Enroll
Admitted students join a cohort of four from their grade, then choose a start date and a payment option.
The entrance exam
Sixty minutes in four sections. Scratch paper is allowed. Calculators and outside help are not.
| Section | Time | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematical fluency | 15 minutes | Command of the foundations the program builds on |
| Advanced reasoning | 20 minutes | How the student handles problems they have not seen before |
| Problem solving | 20 minutes | Multistep reasoning and the ability to explain a solution |
| Student reflection | 5 minutes | Interests, goals and how the student approaches hard problems |
How the exam is supervised
The exam is taken at home, under exam conditions, so that the placement reflects your student’s own work.
Parent consent first.
A parent reviews and approves the exam rules and supervision before the exam begins.Camera on, secure browser.
The exam runs in a locked browser window with the camera on, so the result is fair to every applicant.Recordings kept private.
Recordings are used only to confirm the exam was taken independently and are deleted after the admission decision.Accommodations available.
If your student needs extra time or another adjustment, tell us in the application.
