About Right Tail Math

We teach the students out on the right edge of the curve, and the ones on their way there.

Why we started

Most math classes are paced for the average student. That is a reasonable choice for a school, but it leaves out students who are ready for more. They get bored, they coast, and some of them decide math is not for them before they ever see the interesting parts.

Right Tail Math exists for those kids. The name comes from statistics. On a bell curve, the right tail holds the values far above the average. For us, it is the students working well beyond grade level. Our job is to give them the challenge they are missing, and to help students who are close to that edge get there.

How we work

  • Curriculum designed by a PhD statistician. A university professor with a PhD in statistics sets our course sequences, writes the placement assessments and reviews learning plans, so students move quickly without leaving gaps.
  • Lessons led by university math majors. Tutors are undergraduate mathematics majors trained on our curriculum. They have taken these courses themselves, students relate to them, and they know which explanations make each idea click.
  • One on one, online. Every student gets their own tutor and their own plan, wherever they live.

What we believe

  • Placement should be based on what a child has mastered, not on their age.
  • Acceleration only works without gaps, so we check before we move on.
  • Hard problems are the point. Students learn the most from problems they cannot solve right away.
  • Parents deserve straight answers, which is why we write our parent guides.
